# The Foundations Before we can build, we must understand what has collapsed and why. The three great anchors of pre-modern meaning — **religious transcendence**, **national mythology**, and **biological continuity** — each assumed a finite timeframe. Death was the grammar of significance; everything derived meaning from its position in relation to the end. Remove the end, and the grammar breaks.
